Local Top Sporting Talent: Claire Gunney – Marathon Kayaker

For recent editions of our Knaphill News magazine, KRA have been pleased to feature some of our dedicated local young sportsmen and women who are striving for success in their chosen sport. We are following up these features with short website articles about other talented young people. Today we are featuring Claire Gunney.

Local girl Claire’s chosen sport is Marathon Kayaking and she is currently ranked 2nd in the World in this gruelling event. She went to local Hermitage First and Middle and then on to Winston Churchill School. Claire’s sister did a summer fun course and Claire liked the look of the sport so much she asked if she could join a Kayaking Club. She did this when she was 10 years old. The club encouraged her to take part in races and her enthusiasm grew from having successes at Junior Level.

Over the years Claire has faced some major challenges and setbacks but now, aged twenty-eight, she is ranked 2nd in the World on the Official International Canoe Federation (ICF) Rankings. After a successful 2010 Claire’s aim is to improve on her positions in the International Events, hopefully securing a medal in the World Cup race and finishing in the top 5 in the World Championships. Both she and her coach believe these to be realistic and achievable goals. Her major international races in 2011 are: World Cup 1 – Italy in June, European Championships – France in July, and the World Championships – Singapore in October.

Claire has a full time job and trains hard in the evenings and at weekends. Marathon Kayaking is not currently an Olympic Sport, so Claire does not receive any Lottery Funding. She is competing against international athletes, many of whom receive financial support to train full time.

Claire is offering an opportunity to local businesses; offering you an incredible opportunity to be associated with a successful, high ranking athlete in an exciting sport. Claire can place advertising on her kayak, to endorse and advertise the Sponsoring Company. Claire takes part in a large number of Domestic Races within the UK and International Events throughout the year and around the world; as a local athlete securing coverage in local media and through national sports news she can spread the word about your business too.

Please get in touch via KRA if you would like to find out more about ways you could support Claire as a Sponsor or about the exciting sport of Marathon Kayaking.

Well done Claire and good luck for 2011.
