Surrey Police: Police Support Volunteers Required

The Junior Citizens Scheme aims to encourage children to be the responsible citizens.  It is an imaginative way of teaching primary school children how to identify risk and make positive decisions in everyday life. It provides practical learning for young people who are due to make the transition to secondary school, while at the same time encouraging good citizenship and sense of community responsibility.

Junior Citizens schemes are an annual event run on a district/borough basis as a joint initiative between district and borough councils, Surrey Police, Surrey Fire and Rescue Service and volunteers. Children take part in interactive learning sets which require them to make decisions about personal safety and the safety of others, while raising their awareness of danger and the consequences of criminal actions.

Each scheme runs over two or three weeks, depending on the number of schools attending.  There are two sessions each day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon.  Each session will accommodate one or two schools dependent on numbers. On arrival the children are split into groups and will visit each ten minute learning set in rotation.

Learning sets include some or all of the following ( usually 8-10 sets):

  • Fire Safety
  • Rail Safety
  • First Aid
  • Water Safety
  • Road Safety
  • 999 emergencies
  • Internet Safety
  • Stranger Danger
  • Electrical Safety
  • Garden Safety
  • Park Safety
  • Anti-social Behaviour

This is where you come in.  Surrey Police are after volunteers to assist with the delivery of this scheme in the following areas:-

  • Guildford
  • Woking
  • Spelthorne
  • Elmbridge
  • Runnymede

You do not have to be resident in the area, but you must be able to travel to and from the location of the scheme easily.  Travel expenses will be paid.

If you are interested please email volunteer@surrey.pnn.police.uk to request an application pack.

If you are interested in getting involved with this year’s show please don’t be shy, because now is the time to come and join us.  Volunteers are always welcome, and it’s always useful to know that helpers are coming – instead of standing around with crossed fingers hoping that someone will come forward – to join in the fun.

You can contact us at:  villageshow@knaphill.org

We’re fairly well organised but many hands speed things up considerably.  Comments are also very welcome.

If you want to have a stand at this year’s show please follow the links to download an application form.  You will be pleased to know that we haven’t put the prices up, you just need to select what sort of exhibitor you are.

We had a wonderful time!

Volunteers from The Knaphill Residents’ Association (KRA), Mizens Railway and local community groups had been working for months to prepare for the Knaphill Village Show on 16th July, so we were not going to let the grey skies and a few drops of rain dampen our enthusiasm.

There were stalls and attractions from Knaphill community groups, churches, craftsmen and women and local businesses, plus marvellous Mizens train rides. There was Live Music from The Charlie Farley Sunday Four, a well stocked Beer Tent, BBQ and lots of food and refreshments to try. Popular new attractions this year included: Professor Dickie Richards Punch & Judy Shows, Bellytricks – Belly dancers, Alysia Welch’s Diddi Dance and Chobham St Lawrence Morris Dancers.  We had a wonderful day with over a thousand visitors to the Show.

The Knaphill Residents’ Association would like to thank everyone who helped to make the show such a success.  We are really grateful for the financial support of Andrew White at Seymours Knaphill as the main show sponsors, and the many other local businesses and individuals helped by donating Prizes for the Horticultural Show and for the Tombola.

Special thanks go to the volunteers, the clubs and stall holders who worked so hard to create a traditional event for everyone to enjoy. Thanks  also to the people of Knaphill who brought the sunshine with them to share for this fabulous community day.
Thank you everyone.

Knaphill Care are recruiting a new Secretary to the Committee – Volunteers are invited to get in touch

Knaphill Care is our local Knaphill “Good Neighbour Scheme”. It offers help to residents finding everyday tasks difficult: help with shopping, transport to doctors and hospital appointments, collecting prescriptions and small DIY jobs.  Volunteers give an occasional hour or two to help others in the community and the help they give is a vital source of independence to many local residents.

Knaphill Care is eager to hear from people who would like to become Knaphill Care Volunteers, especially drivers willing to take someone to a local appointment.  They also need help from non-drivers, to be an occasional ‘Duty Officer’, answering calls to the Help Line from local people, and then finding a volunteer from the KC list to provide the help needed. There is no pressure to accept jobs. What you do is up to you and all expenses incurred are reimbursed.

Right now Knaphill Care is looking for someone with secretarial experience to step into the role of Secretary to the Committee. The recruit could focus on the role of Secretary; they may not wish to get involved with being a Volunteer or a Duty Officer. The Committee meets about four times a year. This job would be ideal for someone who likes to help ‘behind the scenes’ and who has administrative experience.

For further information about general volunteering or the particular role of Secretary please telephone Margaret Stammers on 01483 797422.

You can make a real and important contribution to the local community by giving up just a little of your time.  To find out more about Knaphill Care, the role of the Volunteers and the kinds of help on offer, see their pages on the Window on Woking Community website:
