Village Meeting 2014

We have organised another village meeting for residents to attend and have their direct questions about Knaphill answered by a panel of local representatives.

As with the last meeting in 2013, this will be chaired completely independently of the KRA and we have no say in questions or indeed control of the meeting at all. The Chair will again be the Reverend Richard Sherlock of the Knaphill Baptist Church in the High Street. You can send in questions via questions@knaphill.org (which are forwarded straight to Rev. Sherlock) or direct at revsherlock@gmail.com, please use whichever you’re most comfortable with.

Further details on the previous village meeting, including questions asked and an FAQ can be found on the page here – https://knaphill.org/about-our-association/village-meeting/

Knaphill village meeting 2014

Broadway flooded

The Broadway is flooded from its junction with Queens Road to Sussex Road. I know SCC do not recognise this problem, they call it ponding. All I know is that in this section of road there is deep water on both the road and the pavement. Anyone walking along this stretch will just get soaked if not from the rain then from the wash caused by passing cars. It is a good job it isn’t a school day.

I am sure SCC, on instructions from Central Government, will say it is exceptional weather. In a report published by Woking Borough Council in October 2013 it stated that one of the problems facing Woking was poor maintenance of the drainage systems or systems with insufficient capacity have contributed to flooding incidents. No action has been taken by our Councillors to this report, it just rests on their bookshelf.

New housing, Clifton Court

Clifton Court is the name of the block of flats above the Tesco store in Knaphill High Street. The flats are owned by Paragon Community Housing and are on a part buy part rent scheme in association with Woking Borough Council. So the flats come under the general heading ‘affordable housing’. I like the description given by Paragon to the location. An opportunity to be part of a village community in a designated conservation area, nestled in the heart of the Surrey countryside. Paragon also state that to be considered you have either to live in Woking or Work in the borough.

Knaphill Show 2014 an absolute belter!

What a fantastic day we had for the 2014 Knaphill Village Show!knaphillshowlogo

So many happy, smiling faces – a real pleasure to see – descended on Mizens Railway in Barrs Lane that we’re still counting the numbers. Saturday 19th proved one thing – community events are just superb and we look forward to putting on many more shows over the years.

A full set off bookings ensured a huge variety in attractions, stalls, food and entertainment and this one could just be the best ever!

But what of that horrible weather forecast stating rain, rain, rain? Not a drop! In fact there were quite a few pink faces going about as the heat was turned up to ‘full’ and the sun came blistering through the clouds. Such a wonderful turn of events for a show that has had mixed weather over the years.

The new music tent proved very popular and the bands got many feet moving about to the tunes throughout the afternoon.

Of course we didn’t have the horticultural event this year which raised a few voices of disappointment; apologies for this but it was unavoidable. Next year it may return.

What did everyone think of this years special guest, Winstan Churchill? I thought he certainly looked that part and the looks on peoples faces seem to have confirmed that he was a great choice for the day.

As always, we would like to hear your feedback on the day so that we can try to introduce your suggestions. All your comments can either be entered below or emailed to ‘stalls@knaphillshow.org‘. This post will also be on the Knaphill Show website at http://www.knaphillshow.org.

For everyone involved it is quite the effort to put on the annual show and the dedication the volunteers put in is admirable in giving freely of their time and efforts for the sole benefit of the Knaphill community. I’d like to say a huge well done and congratulations to the show committee and the day volunteers – you have done a bang up job!

Knaphill Village Show 2014

On behalf of the KRA I would like to say thank you to our sponsors, local traders who donated prizes, entertainers, our small army of volunteers who make the show run smoothly, our hosts Mizen’s and last but not least the residents who attended and I hope had a good time. The show is a village show for the people of Knaphill. The KRA do not organise the event to raise money but to put on a show for the residents and their friends and if you want to get involved in the design and planning of the show in 2015 please contact us.

Knaphill resident dines with HM The Queen!

Theresa Fuoco BEMIt was a memorable day on 3rd June for charity leader Theresa Fuoco BEM when she was invited to Buckingham Palace for a special reception and presented to Her Majesty the Queen.

Knaphill resident Theresa Fuoco BEM, 50, vice-chair and swim co-ordinator for Surrey Dolphins Swimobility, was one of thousands selected for the royal garden party but one of just a handful who got to meet HM the Queen. Mrs Fuoco was accompanied by her husband, John, to the event and daughters Rosie and Georgina.

And it was another chance to celebrate for Mrs Fuoco, who lives in Knaphill, after she was awarded a British Empire Medal in the New Year’s Honours List in January. During the exclusive event at the palace, Mrs Fuoco, who runs the club which offers swimming and water therapy to swimmers with physical disabilities, got the chance to discuss the valuable work she does with the Queen.

surrey dolphinsThe assisted swim charity is based at Woking Leisure Centre and offers a real lifeline to adults across Surrey who have the chance to swim and exercise in a safe and friendly environment. Those who volunteer with Mrs Fuoco describe her as an individual who goes above and beyond for the individuals she works with, including visiting unwell members in hospital and is a great advocate on their behalf.

Speaking about meeting HM the Queen, Mrs Fuoco said:

“It was all a bit surreal but the Queen asked lots about the charity.
“She knows Guildford and Woking but she hasn’t been for a while and she talked to my children about their jobs.
“It was really special.”

To celebrate Mrs Fuoco’s success, there will be a Picnic in the Park for members of the charity on Thursday July 3 at Woking’s Pool in the Park.

PRESS RELEASE: New Home Interiors Shop ‘Pops Up’ in Knaphill

A new ‘pop up’ shop has just opened on Anchor Hill, Knaphill, and is already creating quite a buzz among the local shoppers.

Long term Knaphill resident, Richard Burt, is selling off his unique and personal collection of antiques, china, glassware, furniture and collectables.

But ‘Knaphill Interiors’, on Anchor Hill will only be trading for a few months, so you’ll need to take a look soon rather than later!

“After over 35 years here in Knaphill, I’ve decided to put my property on the market and retire to Dorset”, said Richard, a former Florist in village. “I ran ‘Forget-Me-Not Flowers’ here for many years before leasing out my shop premises. Now the recent tenants have relocated, I’ve decided the time is right to make the move.”

With his sharp eye for visual design in flowers, Richard has a developed a passion for collecting fine pieces of interior design over the years. “I admit I’ve been a bit of a hoarder,” he said. “I’ve always been one to spot the potential in something, but I’ve run out of storage space here and I know there just won’t be the room in my new home.”

With the now vacant retail unit at the front of his property, he decided it would be a great idea to sell off some of his collection at very affordable prices for those who appreciate the finer details. “I’d heard the term ‘pop up restaurant’ and thought the idea of a ‘pop-up shop’ would be a good way for me to get into the sorting and clearing mood. I have far too many beautiful items and would love for others to be able to cherish them as much as I have!”

Richard’s freehold 3 bedroom property including the Anchor Hill 250sq ft retail unit is being marketed for sale by Seymours in Knaphill. “This really is a unique opportunity. Mr Burt’s home is stylishly presented,” said Seymours Partner, Simon Stone. “The lock-up shop at the front is self contained and can either be let out generating an extra income or used for a new or existing business by the purchaser.”

“I’ll be sad to be leaving friends behind”, said Richard, “but I know that others will be able to take pleasure in the things I’m leaving behind by selling them off in the shop.”

Knaphill Interiors (next to the Barbers on Anchor Hill) is open 10am-5pm Wednesday to Saturday and at other times by arrangement. Call Richard on 01483 488763 for further details or visit the website at http://knaphillinteriors.co.uk.

Gaming Parody Launched to Support Peer Productions

Today fledgling indie game company Not Games release NGTAV, an affectionate satire of Grand Theft Auto V, last years best selling game. Every member of the NotGames team credits Peer Productions with having had a transformational effect on their lives, and say they are determined that the charity’s amazing work should continue. 100% of the profits from NotGTAV will be donated to Peer Productions.

After learning of Peer Productions recent struggle for funding a resolute group of former students and current staff have come together to create NotGames, an imaginative approach to fundraising.

The team have put their creativity to work developing a humorous, hand drawn, 20 minute gaming romp along the M4 corridor, available to buy for Windows PC (XP upwards). Every element of the game has been created by the team, from the deliberately naive graphics style to the sound effects and music which are all made using only the voices of the team. NotGTAV has several difficulty modes ranging from Wii Mode (the easiest) to Dark Souls Mode (probably impossible).

NotGTAV is available on a “Give what you want” deal. Purchasers can select any price from 10p upwards, although the suggested donation is £1.99.

NotGTAV features three characters – Daffyd, a Welsh farmer with a dodgy caravan site; Darren, a wannabe gangsta who hangs out in the LIDL car park, Swindon; and David Cameron, a Prime Minister of diminishing credibility. When playing as David Cameron, the player will be running over (among others) benefit scroungers, public sector workers, and liberals.

Peer Productions is the UK’s leading peer education arts charity. We work with young people and vulnerable groups to create educational theatre and film focusing on social issues such as teen pregnancy, domestic violence and homophobia. Since opening our doors in 2006 Peer Productions have reached over 70,000 young people, more than 17,000 in the last year alone.

To reach their funding target Not Games need to 15,000 copies of NotGTAV at the suggested donation of £1.99.

NotGTAV is on Sale now at notgames.co.uk.

Thank you for your support
